About the Project

Since 2001, the DAAD and the DZHW (formerly HIS and HIS-HF) have been reporting in Wissenschaft weltoffen on facts and figures on the internationality of studies and research in Germany and worldwide. Since 2014, a compact edition with the most important facts and figures has also been published in a handy brochure format, alternating every six months with the main edition. Since 2020, both editions have been published in separate German and English versions.

Data Collection 2024

Many German and international organizations fund the international mobility of researchers. As for the previous editions, we would like to collect the the numbers of researchers funded by the various institutions and organisations for the next edition of Wissenschaft weltoffen. Here, we provide different forms for this.

Project partners & Financing

Wissenschaft weltoffen is a joint project of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW). The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).

Data service

The DAAD and the DZHW have set up a service centre that provides advisory support and carries out evaluations of the data presented according to individual ideas and needs. For example, individual crossings of certain characteristics of the student and academic staff statistics such as disciplines, types of degrees or categories of higher education institutions are possible. Enquiries for academic purposes are free of charge.

Methodology

Wissenschaft weltoffen draws on various data sources on the international mobility of students, academics, and researchers. When interpreting these data, it should be noted that there are very different forms of student, academic and researcher mobility, the data collection of which is associated with different assumptions.

Structure of the world regions

Here you will find the classification of the world regions used in the data compilation of Wissenschaft weltoffen. Since the 2017 edition, the regional classification of Wissenschaft weltoffen corresponds to the regional classification of the DAAD.
