International students in Germany since winter semester 2018/19
In the first two years of the Corona Pandemic 2020 and 2021, there has been no slump in the number of international students at German universities despite global mobility restrictions. On the contrary, their numbers have increased even further: from the winter semester 2019/20 to the winter semester 2020/21, the number of international students has risen from around 319,900 to 324,700. This corresponds to an increase of 2%. This positive development continues in the winter semester 2021/22, the second winter semester during the Corona pandemic. At that time, a total of around 349,400 international students were enrolled at German universities, an increase of around 24,700 or 8% compared to the winter semester 2020/21. For the winter semester 2022/23, there was a further increase in the number of international students by 5% compared to the previous year, to around 367,600 students.
