Share of internationally mobile domestic students in later semesters of all domestic students in later semesters, by type of degree and university, in 2016 and 2021
The highest mobility rate is recorded by students in higher semesters in the Master’s programme. 31% of them were able to demonstrate study-related experience abroad in 2021. The higher rate of international mobility compared to Bachelor’s degree programmes is also a result of the longer total duration of studies for Master’s degree students. There are clear differences between the types of universities: While 32% of the corresponding Master’s students at universities spent time abroad, this only applies to 26% of the students at universities of applied sciences. Compared to the values for 2016, international mobility in the Master’s programme has decreased. At that time, 35% of Master’s students in higher semesters had experience abroad, 36% at universities and 29% at universities of applied sciences.
The extent of international mobility in the Bachelor’s programme is significantly lower than in the Master’s programme, due in part to the shorter duration of the programme. 12% of Bachelor’s students in higher semesters have been abroad for study purposes, 13% at universities, 12% at universities of applied sciences. Here, too, there is a clear difference to the situation five years earlier; in 2016, the rate was 17% at both universities and universities of applied sciences. Finally, the mobility rate for higher semesters in the state examination programmes reached 25% in 2021, around five percentage points less than in 2016.
